The Volkswagen Scirocco has recently reached its 100,000 unit production landmark, two years after the launching of its current incarnation (the third generation).

According further to the press release, the compact sports coupe is the “most successful Volkswagen in its segment,” selling 795,650 units from its market launch in 1974 until 1992. The third generation is what’s being currently produced. The 100,000th Scirocco rolled off at the VW Autoeuropa - Automoveis Ltda. plant in Portugal. This unit was a range-topping Scirocco R 2.0 TSI, painted in Rising Blue Metallic, with a Titan Black interior, radio navigation system, Park Pilot and a tilting sunroof. Andreas Hinrichs, Autoeuropa Plant Manager, described the Scirocco as “one of the most important cars” that the company produces. Over 3,000 people are employed at the Autoeuropa site, which also produces the Eos and the New Sharan.
