Audi A3 e-Tron Concept unveiled

This is the Audi A3 e-tron Concept for Auto Shanghai - not to be confused with the previous A3 e-tron technical study.

This A3 e-tron is not an all-electric model. Instead, it is a plug-in hybrid and is based on the A3 sedan concept that was recently introduced at the Geneva auto show.

The plug-in hybrid drivetrain of this A3 e-tron features a 155 kW (211 PS / 207 bhp) 1.4 liter TFSI four-cylinder engine coupled to an electric motor with an output of 20 kW (27 PS / 27 bhp) - total power quotient for the vehicle is 175 kW (238 PS / 234 bhp). Transmission is the seven-speed S tronic.

That makes this A3 e-tron far quicker on the 0 to 100 km/h sprint than the previous all-electric variant. This A3 e-tron sedan 'notchback' (four-seater) accomplishes the feat in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 231 km/h (144 mph).

On electric power alone, the A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid has a range of up to 54 km (34 miles) with the 12 kWh lithium-ion batteries located behind the rear seats providing the juice.

This plug-in hyrid A3 e-tron actually looks quite production-ready and features a chassis derived from the current RS 3 Sportback along with a performance suspension and 20-inch light alloy wheels.
